Narrative
Because this site is in an enterprise zone and was designated a brownfield, Wal-Mart was eligible for multiple subsidies. According to the Escambia County director of Community Redevelopment Services, this site was not classified as a brownfield until Wal-Mart pursued this designation, thus providing itself more tax refunds. According to county officials, Wal-Mart took advantage only of state incentives, with the exception of an application to the county for about $18,000 in sales tax credits for business equipment. According to Joseph Bell of Enterprise Florida, the public-private statewide economic development agency, his organization signed a confidentiality agreement with Wal-Mart and thus cannot disclose specifics of the deal.
