Narrative
This distribution center will be eligible for the state's One Maryland Tax Credit program but is receiving no incentives from the county. Under the state program, Wal-Mart could receive up to $5 million in income tax credits. An article in The Baltimore Sun on November 24, 2004, reported that, in addition to income tax credits, the state has promised Wal-Mart $225,000 for work force training and $800,000 toward the purchase price. In the same article, the Sun also reported that Somerset County will get $6 million in federal grants and loans along with $500,000 from the state for infrastructure improvements related to the project. Local officials would not confirm any of the incentive costs for us. There have been many delays with this project and Wal-Mart has not yet bought the land on which the distribution center would be built.
